The story began in Romania in 1727 with the erection of a monastery on the mountain Paduret in the region Poiana Teiului in the department Neamt. More than 200 years years later in 1933, the monastery was dismantled. The little church built there, however, was taken apart and removed from the mountain to be rebuilt in the village of Calugareni. Faithful worshipers came from all over the region to pray and celebrate religious holidays in this church.
In 1959 during the communist years, the government decided to construct a large hydroelectric plant in this area. Most of the population was displaced and entire villages destroyed. The worshipers again did not give up on their church. Once again it was take apart and rebuilt in the village of Leghin. Today the church continues to serve it’s worshipers , but it’s painful past is evident in it’s degenerated state. The population of Leghin has diminished, however worshipers from the nearby village of Domesnic use this church as their own. They are an impoverished, but very religious community.
Adrian Apostol, the priest and spiritual mentor, along with his followers, hope to rebuild and enlarge this church. This project would expand the church’s capacity to receive worshipers from nearby villages, and improve the spiritual life of the community.
